Mommy Mondays: Natural Baby Products

Sometimes Mom's know best.

I remember growing up, my mom always use to tell me "Natural is better". Of course, at the time I ignored her. I grew up in a time of "the Body shop" So from soaps to body washes and fragrance lotions, I had to have it. There seemed to be (and maybe still is) a notion that The Body Shop products are natural. They are not.

Fast forward several years decades, and I find myself expecting my first baby. All of the sudden, finding natural products not only for my daughter, but for myself as well seemed very important. But if I start talking about all products...this will be a very long long post. So I will stick to just baby products for this post.

When I started on my quest, I was naive. I assumed that if a product said "all natural" it really was all natural. That was until I found out that there are no real regulations governing the use of "organic" and "natural" on products in North America . I was already warned to avoid Aveeno Baby so the first product I bought for my little one was from the line "Live Clean" http://live-clean.com/

Even though the product says it's paraben and sulfate free, after carefully reviewing the ingredients, I was disappointed to learn that it had many of the same harmful chemicals that all other lines had. I contacted the company for clarification, but no one got back to me (yup...I'm THAT person) so I moved on.

Next I stumbles about a great website http://evolvingwellness.com/ and met a wonderful and helpful lady named Evita Ochel who helped me find safe and natural baby products to use on the little one.

I should point out, that on most occasions I use good old fashion water and olive oil, or coconut oil, but there are times I need something more (body/hair wash sunscreen etc) I decided to go with products by a company named California baby http://www.californiababy.com/. These products are truly as safe as it gets. and rates from 0-2 on the Skin deep Database which is a great website that give a numeric value of 0-10 in relations to a products toxicity level. 0-2 is very very low. Try typing in some of the products you use to see how they measure up.... you might be scared!  http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

I'm happy to report that my daughter hasn't had any reaction to these products, and I feel good about using them on her whenever needed . I never thought I would be so obsessive passionate about finding natural products until I became a mom!

Anyone else turn into a hippie once they became pregnant?

UPDATE: Since writing this, I was advised (see comments below) That California Baby has recently reformulated it's products and are not as "chemical free" as they used to be!! Thanks Ms Fantastic for pointing that out! The ones I am currently using are pre reformulation so once they are used up, I will be finding a new skin care line. See the comments below for great suggestions! Thanks ms. Fantastic and Evita!

  1. What do you use for your baby's lotion? My baby has really dry skin! It is soo dry it is turning into eczema. I've literally used everything (Aveeno, Johnsons, Glaxal Base) but I haven't seen any solid results. The doctor prescribed some cream to put on her dry spots but I was looking for something more natural.

    1. I use the lotion from the California Baby line. But my little one doesnt have exema so it might be strong enough. When she does get little dry sports i use olive oil or pure virgin coconut oil which is very easily absorbed into the skin. THere was once a stubborn sport that wouldn't go away and my doc prescribed Cortizone (booo) so i got a little tube of Aqquafor jelly. Although this isn't 100% naturual, i figured it was better than getting the cortizone. It created a nice barrier on the dry spot and it was gone in a day or two.

      hope this helped :)

  3. Ohhh right here! I'm that hippie :) we use the Cali baby calendula cream on the occasional dry spot...but there's a small problem. They reformulated many of their products recently, and have began using some not so great preservatives. I read www.safemama.com and they have tons of reviews on natural products..for mama & baby. But...the CB drama is also on there (it's very recent).

Lately I've loved Shea Moisture, Sweet Knee & Dr Bronners. And I'm savoring our last jar of the CB calendula lotion ;)

  4. Hi Mehreen

This is a great write-up to help more moms out there make the best decisions for their babies and not expose them to the slew of harmful chemicals out there. (And thank you for the mention too :)

That is too bad to hear about California Baby changing. It is so disappointing when companies have a nice natural product and then re-formulate to make it worse. This is why I always encourage readers to glance at ingredient lists from time to time because we may find an awesome product we learn to trust and then it gets changed right under our nose. It is so sad, but all in the name of profit.

Anyway, my sister had a baby 2 months ago and I was doing more research to help her find the best natural products (and in Canada) and came across the following:

    1. The Earth Mama - Angel Baby has some outstanding products
    http://www.earthmamaangelbaby.com/

    2. EarthSafe Baby all purpose wash
    http://well.ca/products/earthsafe-baby-everywhere-wash_27326.html

    3. Dr. Bronner's Organic Baby all purpose body/hair soap
    http://well.ca/products/dr-bronners-organic-baby_18744.html

And as always, your tips for natural extra virgin olive and/or coconut oil are great for completely natural moisturizing.

In general, Well.ca is outstanding at having an excellent selection of natural products with free shipping in Canada and even possible for US customers. Their prices are a little higher than if one looks elsewhere, but their convenience is hard to beat.

    All the best always :)
